American Fundamentalists, the Painting

Exhibit and talk by artist Joel Pelletier

I
n the summer of 2005, the Humanist Center exhibited American Fundamentalists (Christ's Entry into Washington in 2008) by Los Angeles artist Joel Pelletier.

The massive 14-foot by 8-foot acrylic on canvas painting depicts more than 100 contemporary American fundamentalists--including religious, political and corporate leaders. The work revisits a famous 19th century painting, Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889, by Belgian artist James Ensor.

As part of a national tour, Pelletier visited the Humanist Center to deliver a talk about both his painting and Ensor's original.
